Shiraz(Iran), 23 October. General Assembly of Union of International Alpine Association(UIAA) has been concluded successfully in this beautiful town Shiraz of Iran . The GA of UIAA has chosen Mangolia for next year Assembly Meeting which will began from 6th October 2018.
The UIAA General Assembly 2017 voted for Malta Climbing Club to be promoted a new full member association . The UIAA now represents 92 member associations from 69 countries.
UIAA Annual General Assembly confirmed the nomination of two new Commission Presidents. Amit Chowdhury (IMF, India) will succeed Dave Custer (AAC, United States) as President of the UIAA Safety Commission and Carlos Teixeira (FCMP, Portugal) has succeeded Urs Stôcker (SAC, Switzerland) as Ice Climbing Commission President.
A significant development in the sport of ice climbing saw the election of Kendra Stritch (AAC, United States), Nikolai Primorev (RMF, Russia) and Gordon McArthur ( ACC, Canada) to the Ice Climbing Commission.
UIAA has mentioned that all three ice climbers whose involvement in the Commission demonstrates the UIAA’s desire for athletes to have an even stronger voice in the future of the sport.
This General Assembly re-elected Peter Muir (ACC, Canada) as Continental Representative for North America in the UIAA Management Committee and Stuart Gray (NZAC, New Zealand) for Oceania. Franz Stämpfli, Dennis Poncelin and Marco del Zotto were elected as members of the UIAA Court.
The Mount Everest Biogas Project (MEBP) was announced as the overall winner of the 2017 UIAA Mountain Protection Award. The United States-based project is a volunteer-run, non-profit organization which has designed an environmentally sustainable solution to the impact of human waste on Mt. Everest and other high altitude locations.
The Mount Everest Biogas Project (MEBP) is the fifth winner of the annual Award joining projects from Ethiopia, Tajikistan, Nepal and France. Since 2013, over 80 projects from 37 countries have been showcased as part of the UIAA Mountain Protection Award platform
Union of Asian Alpine Associations (UAAA) held their continental meeting after the GA of UIAA.
Delegates representing UIAA member associations on all six continents attended the annual conference organized by the Iran Mountaineering and Sports Climbing Federation (IMSCF).
On his opening remarks UIAA President Frits Vrijlandt said,“ Our global safety standards continue to prove their value to the climbing and mountaineering community; the UIAA’s work in sustainability continues to grow in international stature; and in sport our member federations are increasingly active in recreational climbing and mountaineering, and many in competitive climbing and mountaineering, including ice climbing and sky running.”
UIAA has developed four years Strategic Plan 2017-2020 to carry out its activities more effectively.
UIAA Vice-President Peter Farkas presented more specific details about the progress made during the first twelve months of the current four-year plan across the UIAA’s three pillars of safety, sport and sustainability.
Nepalese delegation also participated in the event under the leadership Dibas Bikram Shah, first Vice President of Nepal Mountaineering Association.
